Graphic design: the 7 basic principles you absolutely must know
Graphic Designing

Overall, we always find the "soul" of the graphic designer, in each of his services. But what you might not know is that every designer always sticks to a few basic principles of graphic design, even without realizing it.

Today, we present to you from our experience, the 7 key principles of design, those that we consider essential, for a good graphic design.

Balance or alignment

Imagine that you have just moved into a new house and you need to redesign your living room. Would you put all your furniture on one side? Obviously not. You will try to place them in such a way as to obtain a certain balance.

It is the same in graphics. Each item you place has a weight. The way you have large pieces of furniture and smaller pieces, so is that you have items of different colors, textures, or sizes.

It is therefore necessary to know how to place each element in the right place.

Harmony

The ideal in a visual design is to use elements of the same style to obtain a harmonious organization.

But generally it is difficult to get photos taken in the same place, with the same people for example. It takes a little more investment. So what to do when you only have items from different sources?

Use your creativity. Put the elements together so that they match together. If it is for example photos, you can use a filter to create a look-alike effect. Either way, always make sure to group your elements together in perfect harmony.

Emphasis

For us, emphasis is the fundamental element of graphic design. What is that? Imagine that you want to make a graphic for a new restaurant opening in your city. You need to think about what might seem most important to future customers.

Is this the frame? Leader? Or the kitchen itself? Everything will depend on the popularity of the brand, the chef, or the originality of the dishes offered. This is where you get the attention of the potential customer. So always find the most important element and build your graphics around it.

The contrast

How would you feel if you stumble upon a graphic design where everything is written in bold? So no element is more important than the others?

This is why you must know how to reinforce the effect of each shape, each text, and each visual on your graphics in order to emphasize certain elements. Bet on sizes, colors, and typography to give dynamism to your creation and improve its readability.

But remember, don't overdo it. Always find the right fit. Why not just use two fonts at most? Usually, this is more than enough.

Repetition

Think when you rehearse yourself in your visual design, it's not creative enough? Well, you got it all wrong. The repetitions give an effect of unity between the different graphic elements used.

If you used this color just once, it would do as a stain. Three times you strengthen your design.

By repeating yourself, you also strengthen your brand identity. To find elements specific to you. This is all the more interesting when you make different graphics for the same entity.

Proportions

Remember, above we talked about the most important element of your design, emphasis. Once it has been chosen, you have to think about the other elements, each according to its importance.

Here, you therefore decide on the sizes and proportions that you give to the other components. It's up to you to see whether to exaggerate at certain levels or rather to stay sober

White or negative space

It may seem unlikely to say that in a visual design, the less information you put, the more you arouse the curiosity of the public. And yet, it is so TRUE! White space refers to empty spaces around objects. They are very important.

Negative space helps you focus on the essentials. Know how to make good use of it!

And There you go! You have just discovered the 7 key principles of good graphic design. Of course, you don't have to use all of these rules every time to be a good designer. Again, it all depends on your own style.

But it's always good to master the basics. This list may not seem exhaustive. It all depends on the points of view. So tell us, what is for you the most important thing to consider in graphic design?

See you in the comments!
